Acupuncture for Pain Management

Chronic pain is one of the most well-researched applications of acupuncture, with substantial evidence supporting its effectiveness for conditions including lower back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, knee osteoarthritis, headaches, migraines, and fibromyalgia. Acupuncture is now recommended in clinical guidelines for chronic pain management by major health organisations worldwide, including Australia's own medical bodies. src

Acupuncture works for pain through multiple mechanisms. It stimulates the release of endorphins — the body's natural painkillers — and modulates the nervous system to reduce pain signalling. It also improves local blood circulation, reduces inflammation, and releases muscle tension. For many patients, acupuncture provides relief where conventional treatments such as anti-inflammatory medications or physiotherapy have reached their limits.

In TCM, pain is understood as a blockage in the flow of Qi and Blood through the body's meridian system. The nature of the pain — whether it is sharp or dull, fixed or moving, worse with cold or heat — guides the practitioner in identifying the type of blockage and selecting the most appropriate treatment points. This diagnostic precision is why acupuncture can be effective for such a wide range of pain conditions.

Treatment frequency depends on the severity and chronicity of the pain. Acute conditions may respond within a few sessions, while chronic pain that has persisted for months or years typically requires a longer course of treatment — often weekly sessions over six to eight weeks, followed by maintenance visits. Josephine may combine acupuncture with cupping, moxa, or herbal medicine for enhanced results, tailoring each session to your response and progress.
